In addition to being an eAdvancement principal, Jerold Pearson was Director of Market Research at Stanford University for 22 years (1994-2016) – first in the Office of Development and then in the Stanford Alumni Association. Prior to specializing in research related to advancement, Jerold worked for research firms in Los Angeles and Boulder, Colorado, doing political polling, new product development, and customer satisfaction research. Since 1994, he has conducted scores of primary research studies spanning a wide range of advancement topics including alumni, parent, and constituent relations; fundraising messaging and strategy development; stewardship; online, social media, and print communications; community relations; program evaluation; and student affairs.
Jerold attended Amherst College before transferring to Stanford, where he earned his AB in communications and art history in 1975. He then did graduate study in survey research methodology at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He has been published in market research and advancement journals, served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Educational Advancement, and has taught workshops and spoken at many conferences in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Within the consortium, Jerold focuses on conducting primary market research in all areas of advancement. He conducts quantitative research (surveys), qualitative research (focus groups), and observational research (usability testing for online resources and services). His services include designing the research plan; writing the research instruments; collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data; and reporting the results.
